enjoy!
oooh! Now, recommendations are something I can do! :)
Two books:
Colorful Stitchery by Kristin Nicholas
Even if you don't do much embroidery (or ANY, as the case may be...), this is one of those books that will have you perusing the floss aisles at the local stitching shop. Just the -colors- will make you swoon, and the paris cafe towels are divine. Trust me here.
Denyse Schmidt's "Quilts"
I can't sew. I mean it. I try, and the sewing machine /injures/ me. (I have the scar from the stitches. I'm really not kidding. I wish I was, but I'm not.) Despite that, I saw this book ONCE, and started collecting fabric to make things with. And I've even MADE A FEW....WITHOUT INCIDENT. (That's big. Seriously big.) It's swoony. The stuffed quilted cat pattern alone is worth the cost of the book.
Books aside, you should check out an old-ish movie called "The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit". You may have to get it from amazon, since it's too old for many of the short-attention-span movie rental businesses to still have. It's an urban fairy tale about five guys who pool their money for a magical white suit that makes all their deepest dreams come true. You'd love it.
And for products (yes, I know I'm past the two mark, but there are a lot.), I'm inordinately fond of the journal I got from amano.com. Bri makes the original art for each of the coptic-bound journals by hand, and mine never leaves my bag. I've already got another one picked out.
If you haven't heard about Amy (angry chicken)'s Mail Order club, you should. Check out kingpod.com, under the paper goods section. You have to be quick, though -- she only makes 200 of them each time, and they are SOOO worth it. I've got the birthday calendar project hanging over my computer as I type this, and it's so cute and inspiring...and my husband is inordinately pleased with the apple crisp I made from her last mailing.
http://www.moonlightchronicles.com = best. zine. ever. for draw-ers and artists and free spirits. I'm collecting them all, slowly, now that price has the whole archives available again. Mrrrowr. He is /so/ my Imaginary Boyfriend.
You already know about paperbella.com and mantofev.com, don't you?
There's more where this came from. Tell me if you want 'em. :)
all time favorite silly laugh out loud
movie: drop dead fred
music i have just started listening to
and found that i adore it: azure ray
hope you like 'em
:)
Two things that rock my art world right now:
1. German Glass Glitter found here:
http://www.papiervalise.com
(Look under the glass heading)
Comes in silver, pale blue, orange, black, chartreuse, clear, red and pink!! I love it-it's the perfect little touch to add to vintage work!
2. James BLunt's new CD "Back to Bedlam". Great to listen to while creating! Love him!!
Joleen ~
I'm a lurker on your site.. and feel inspired by your craftiness & the beauty of your work.
First contest for me too ...
While I love being creative ~ Life contains so many other wonders... here are a few of my recommendations:
1) Any delicous ice cream concoction from Cold Stone Creamery.
2) Real Simple magazine... it's just simply fabulous. Clean cut lines, color, and organization.
3) An evening with friends. Grab your friends (they are tangible) and have an evening of fun (spontaneous or planned). It's so important to be joyfully surrounded by friends... we don't do it enough.
Ok Joleen if you don't run out to your nearest store and buy these 2 things you will be seirously missing out
#1 Carob covered malt balls (don't run because I said carob, give em a try they are soooooo good)
#2 Whole Foods Market's chocolate truffles (can you tell I have a huge sweet tooth, these are crazy addictive and good, they melt in your mouth)
I love reading your contests. They give us so much ammunition. Thanks for hosting them!
Tangible things, huh???
I love the stress relief soak salts from Bath and Body works. They have sage and lavender in them and are WONDERFUL after a long day. They even help my sore muscles when my fibro is acting up like now.
I also love a comfortable pair of slippers. Dearfoam usually has the best ones. Ballerina style works the best, 'cause they hug your tired feet.
Theme???? pamper thy self. It's in the Bible. Check it out!
Hey Joleen,
Still working on a surprise for you but until you get that in the mail you should buy:
1) The movie Amelie, because it is an absolutely stunning story.
2) Caramellows (Chocolate, handmade caramel and handmade marshmallow) from Byrne and Carlson in Portsmouth New Hampshire. It's a little tiny chocolatier in my hometown that is world renown - and their confections are so droolworthy I'm making puddles on myself just thinking about it!
I won last time, so I don't think it's fair to win again - but, I'm always willing to recomend great books!
1.) The Hotel New Hampshire - John Irving.
2.) The Catalpa Tree - Denyse Devlin (Her name makes it sound like a trashy romance, but it's not at all, it's brilliant.)
Just two things to love eh? I love my mama -- for her crafty, witty ways. www.karelsquilts.com.
And I love bagels with peanut butter. Double toasted. With a large hot tea. Yum!
Hi Joleen,
Just want to say I check your blog every day to be inspired simply by the colors and the ideas. Thank you for that!
Two things I recommend:
"Somewhere In Time" with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. Still my favorite movie and haunting in its romance and timelessness.
And: "A Woman's Place" - a novel by Anne Eliot Crompton. Might be hard to find - I think it's out of print, but it really is a terrific book. It's all about an old house and the women who inhabit it over time.
Thanks for the fun!
Laurie
Hello my dear ! I hope you're fine ! The two things I love are : my favourite movie "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" with Audrey Tautou ! Hi Joleen,
Here I am participating at this contest for the first time.
a book - I recommend you my favorite book "Of love and other demons" Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a very powerful book an enchanting story from the 17th century, full of love, hate, madness a magical tale.
a movie - "A very long engagement" the last movie from Jean-Pierre Jeunet (the Amelie movie director)If you like to see how love was like during the 1st world war in France, it's an enchanting movie, full of poetry that will take back in time and space to France and live the story of Mathilde's , in her search for the truth about what happenned to the man she loves .
Hope you'll like my suggestions .
thanks
Great blog Joleen. I always look forward to seeing the beautiful goodies you post. I have to say that I love the movie Bringing Up Baby. Cary Grant & Katherine Hepburn are a fantastic duo in this hilarious movie. If you've never seen it, rent (or buy) it TODAY. You won't be disappointed.

Also, I would recommend reading The Lovely Bones if you have not. This book moved me to tears. Such a wonderful story.
